a southern belle

I like to shock my Canadian friends by announcing that I’m a southern belle (born in Charlotte, NC and raised in Stone Mountain, Ga). I was born into a very musical family. I could go on and on and list all the ways my life was inundated with music, but let’s just say my parents, brother, grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc all loved to sing and dance... and were/are quite good at it too.

I moved to Vancouver Island in the fall of 2000, and my love of music came along with me. Thankfully God has faithfully brought (and keeps bringing) musical, creative, beautiful friends into my life with whom I can share my passions.

Dissonance: a tension or clash resulting from two disharmonious or unsuitable elements.

A few years ago, a wise friend told me that life involves an important balance of “grief over the pain and celebration for the healing”.  These words keep coming back to me and the reality is so evident. Almost daily I am confronted with those two extremely opposite emotions.

This has formed the inspiration for my new album.

Dissonance

album coming soon

I am currently living in the tension of seeing some really beautiful dreams come to life, while other hopes and dreams are coming to an end. I want to explore the idea of dissonance musically while I am in the midst of experiencing it in my reality. Sometimes the questions we ask do not have easy answers, and I’m finding there can be beauty and serenity in those unresolved places.

One of my favourite quotes says, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” The making of this album has really been like that for me. I turned to music as my therapy in a rough season, and then found so much joy and beauty in the creative process. Music and dance are how I discover the hidden emotions that I bury and try so hard to ignore. Music opens the doors that were slammed and then got stuck. On this album, you will find a mix of songs about the joys and beauties of life, as well as the sorrows and “why God?” moments of life.

Thankfulness

I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to finally share and archive my songs in this way. It is such a privilege to be working with my new friend and producer, Corwin Fox, as well as many fabulous musicians who add so many nice flavours to my songs. How all the right people and right situations came together at the right time to make this happen is definitely something to celebrate!

Friend, we are all on a journey. It is my prayer that these songs will unlock some doors for you as they have for me. May they help you find, as I have, a Love that will not let you go.
